Ingredients
Scale
Base Ingredients
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 2–3 tbsp heavy cream or milk
- 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract (use clear for bright white frosting)
- Pinch of salt
Optional Enhancements
- ¼ tsp almond extract for a bakery-style flavor
- Gel food coloring for seasonal themes
- 2 oz cream cheese (whipped in for tangy depth)
Instructions
- Beat Butter: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter on high speed until it becomes creamy and pale, about 2–3 minutes. This aerates the butter, creating a fluffy base for the frosting.
- Add Powdered Sugar Gradually: Slowly add powdered sugar one cup at a time, beating on low speed to avoid a sugar cloud and to fully incorporate each addition.
- Add Flavor and Cream: Mix in the pure vanilla extract, pinch of salt, and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk. Beat the mixture on high speed for 3–4 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
- Adjust Consistency: If needed, add more cream or milk one teaspoon at a time to reach your desired spreading or piping consistency.
- Store or Use: Use the frosting immediately on your baked goods or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Before using from the fridge, bring it back to room temperature and re-whip if necessary.
Notes
- For a bakery-style flavor, add ¼ teaspoon almond extract along with the vanilla.
- Mix in 2 ounces of cream cheese for a tangier frosting variation.
- Use gel food coloring to tint the frosting for themed desserts without altering consistency.
- Ensure butter is softened but not melted for best texture and consistency.
- To make frosting brighter white, use clear vanilla extract instead of regular vanilla.
