Ingredients
Scale
Cake
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup butter
- 3/4 cup water
- 5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 eggs (beaten)
Frosting
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/3 cup buttermilk
- 5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 pound powdered sugar
Instructions
- Prepare the Cake Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt. In a saucepan, combine 1 cup butter, water, and 5 tablespoons cocoa powder. Heat over medium heat until the butter melts and the mixture starts to boil. Remove from heat and pour into the dry ingredients. Stir in the buttermilk and beaten eggs until the batter is smooth and well combined.
- Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into a greased sheet pan and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool slightly before frosting.
- Make the Frosting: In a saucepan, melt 1/2 cup butter over medium heat. Add 1/3 cup buttermilk and 5 tablespoons cocoa powder. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and immediately whisk in vanilla extract and powdered sugar until smooth.
- Frost and Cut: Pour the warm frosting over the slightly cooled cake and spread evenly. Once the frosting sets but is still soft, cut the sheet cake into bite-sized squares. Allow frosting to fully set before serving.
Notes
- For best results, use fresh buttermilk and unsweetened cocoa powder to achieve a rich chocolate flavor.
- Make sure not to overbake the cake to keep it moist and tender.
- The frosting should be poured warm for easy spreading and a glossy finish.
- You can store these cake bites in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
- Adding chopped nuts to the frosting can add a delightful crunch if desired.
