Ingredients
Scale
Vegetables
- 1 medium head cabbage (green)
Seasoning & Fats
- 2 Tbsp. butter (or oil)
- 1 clove garlic (crushed)
- ½ tsp. salt (to taste)
- ¼ tsp. black pepper (to taste)
Instructions
- Shred the Cabbage: Cut the entire head of cabbage into ¼-½ inch slices, resulting in approximately 7-8 cups of shredded cabbage. To shred, remove any tough outer leaves, halve the cabbage, then make thin, even slices across the core.
- Sauté the First Half: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the butter and crushed garlic, sautéing for about 1 minute until fragrant. Add half of the sliced cabbage and cook for 1-2 minutes until it begins to wilt and shrink slightly.
- Add the Rest: Incorporate the remaining cabbage slices along with salt and pepper. Continue cooking for 12-15 minutes, stirring every 2-3 minutes. For a deeper caramelized flavor, allow the cabbage to sit undisturbed for a few minutes between stirs.
- Serve: Once the cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized, serve immediately while warm and enjoy this delicious sautéed side dish.
Notes
- For easier shredding, use a sharp chef’s knife or a mandoline slicer.
- You can substitute butter with olive oil for a dairy-free option.
- Adjust seasoning to taste by adding more salt or pepper if desired.
- Optional: Add a splash of vinegar or a pinch of red pepper flakes for extra flavor.
