Description

This classic Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy is a comforting American main course featuring juicy ground beef patties cooked on the stovetop and smothered in a rich, savory mushroom and onion gravy. Perfect for a hearty family dinner, it pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.

Ingredients

Scale

Steak Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Mushroom Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/2 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined to avoid tough patties, then shape the mixture into 4 oval patties.
  2. Cook the Patties: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for 4–5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Once done, remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.
  3. Sauté Mushrooms and Onions: In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the sliced mushrooms and finely chopped onion. Sauté them until they are softened and browned, roughly 6 to 8 minutes. This step develops the rich flavor for the gravy.
  4. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the flour evenly over the mushrooms and onions. Stir to coat and cook the flour for about 1 minute to eliminate the raw taste. Slowly whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits stuck to the pan’s bottom for extra depth of flavor. Continue to simmer until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
  5. Simmer Patties in Gravy: Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spoon the mushroom gravy over them. Cover the skillet and let it simmer on low heat for another 5 minutes to meld the flavors and keep the patties moist and tender.
  6. Serve: Serve the Salisbury steaks hot with your choice of mashed potatoes or egg noodles to soak up the delicious mushroom gravy.

Notes

  • For an extra flavor boost, add a splash of red wine to the gravy during the simmering step.
  • For a lighter version, ground turkey or chicken can be used instead of beef.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and reheat well the next day.
