Ingredients
Scale
Rice:
- 1 1/2 cups basmati rice
Aromatics:
- 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
Liquid and Seasoning:
- 2 1/2 cups chicken broth or vegetable broth
- 1/4 teaspoon saffron threads
- 2 tablespoons hot water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Garnish:
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley or cilantro, chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Rinse the Rice: Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then drain well.
- Prepare Saffron: Steep the saffron threads in 2 tablespoons of hot water and set aside.
- Sauté Aromatics: Heat the butter or olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
- Add Rice: Add the rice and sauté for 2 minutes, coating the grains in the butter and aromatics.
- Cook the Rice: Pour in the broth, saffron water, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover tightly and simmer for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the rice is tender and liquid is absorbed.
- Rest and Fluff: Remove from heat and let sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork and garnish with fresh herbs if desired before serving warm.
Notes
- For an even richer flavor, replace part of the broth with a splash of white wine when adding liquid.
- Use high-quality saffron threads for the best aroma and color.
- This rice pairs beautifully with grilled meats, curries, or roasted vegetables.
