Description

A fragrant and flavorful saffron rice recipe that is perfect as a side dish for Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, or Indian-inspired meals. This aromatic dish is made with basmati rice, saffron threads, and a blend of onions and garlic, creating a savory and colorful addition to any table.

Ingredients

Scale

Rice:

  • 1 1/2 cups basmati rice

Aromatics:

  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

Liquid and Seasoning:

  • 2 1/2 cups chicken broth or vegetable broth
  • 1/4 teaspoon saffron threads
  • 2 tablespoons hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Garnish:

  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley or cilantro, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the Rice: Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then drain well.
  2. Prepare Saffron: Steep the saffron threads in 2 tablespoons of hot water and set aside.
  3. Sauté Aromatics: Heat the butter or olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
  4. Add Rice: Add the rice and sauté for 2 minutes, coating the grains in the butter and aromatics.
  5. Cook the Rice: Pour in the broth, saffron water, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover tightly and simmer for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the rice is tender and liquid is absorbed.
  6. Rest and Fluff: Remove from heat and let sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork and garnish with fresh herbs if desired before serving warm.

Notes

  • For an even richer flavor, replace part of the broth with a splash of white wine when adding liquid.
  • Use high-quality saffron threads for the best aroma and color.
  • This rice pairs beautifully with grilled meats, curries, or roasted vegetables.
