Ingredients
Scale
For the Burger Patties
- 1 pound ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Olive oil for grilling
For the Wrap and Toppings
- 1 head butter lettuce or iceberg lettuce, leaves separated
- 4 slices cheddar cheese (optional)
- 1 large tomato, sliced
- 1 red onion, sliced into rings
- 1 avocado, sliced
- 1/4 cup pickles, sliced
- Condiments of choice (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise)
Instructions
- Mix the Beef: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently until just combined to avoid tough burgers.
- Form Patties: Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a 3/4-inch thick patty. Create a slight indentation in the center of each to help cook evenly.
- Preheat Grill: Heat your grill or a grill pan over medium-high heat. Lightly brush the grates with olive oil to prevent sticking.
- Grill Patties: Place the patties on the grill and cook for 3-4 minutes per side for medium doneness. Add a slice of cheddar cheese on top during the last minute if desired, allowing it to melt.
- Prepare Lettuce: While the burgers cook, rinse and dry the lettuce leaves carefully to use as the burger buns.
- Assemble Burgers: Place each cooked patty on a lettuce leaf, then top with tomato slices, onion rings, avocado slices, and pickles. Add your favorite condiments.
- Wrap and Serve: Wrap the lettuce leaf snugly around the fillings to hold everything together, creating a handheld wrap.
- Enjoy Immediately: Serve the lettuce wrap burgers right away with any extra lettuce leaves and condiments on the side.
Notes
- Choose butter lettuce for softer, more pliable wraps or iceberg lettuce for extra crunch.
- Do not overmix the ground beef to keep burgers tender and juicy.
- If you want, you can substitute cheddar cheese for any cheese of your choice or omit it for a dairy-free version.
- These burgers are great for a low-carb or gluten-free diet when avoiding traditional buns.
- For a spicier kick, add sliced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the toppings.
