Description

Jalapeno Popper Mummies are a festive and spooky Halloween appetizer featuring jalapeño halves filled with a flavorful cream cheese and cheddar mixture, wrapped in crescent roll dough strips to look like mummies, then baked to golden perfection and decorated with candy eyes for a fun presentation.

Ingredients

Scale

Peppers and Cheese Filling

  • 10 jalapeño peppers, halved lengthwise and seeds removed
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Dough and Decoration

  • 1 (8 oz) can refrigerated crescent roll dough or pizza dough, sliced into thin strips
  • 20 candy eyes
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  2. Make Cheese Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and salt. Mix thoroughly until smooth and well blended.
  3. Fill Jalapeños: Take each jalapeño half and spoon the cheese mixture evenly into the hollowed-out center, making sure to fill but not overstuff.
  4. Wrap with Dough: Wrap each stuffed jalapeño with thin strips of the crescent roll or pizza dough, leaving small gaps to create a mummy bandage effect and a small space near the top for placement of the eyes.
  5. Apply Egg Wash: Lightly brush the wrapped dough with the beaten egg to give the mummies a golden and glossy finish when baked.
  6. Bake: Place the wrapped jalapeños on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 13 to 15 minutes, or until the dough is puffed and golden brown.
  7. Cool and Decorate: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow the mummies to cool slightly. Press candy eyes into the cheese filling near the top of each jalapeño to complete the mummy look.
  8. Serve Warm: Serve these spooky and delicious appetizers warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • You can substitute crescent roll dough with puff pastry for a flakier texture.
  • For a spicier version, leave some jalapeño seeds intact.
  • If candy eyes are not available, use small dots of sour cream with a black sesame seed or mini peppercorns to create eyes.
