Description

Golden Sourdough Cheesy Breadsticks are a deliciously cheesy and garlicky appetizer made with a tangy sourdough starter. These breadsticks feature a crisp golden crust topped with mozzarella, cheddar, Parmesan, and Italian herbs. Perfect for serving warm as a snack or appetizer, they combine the natural flavors of sourdough fermentation with melted cheeses for an irresistible treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 1 cup active sourdough starter (fed and bubbly)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for brushing)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

Topping

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs
  • Coarse salt for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: In a medium bowl, combine the sourdough starter, all-purpose flour, warm water, olive oil, salt, and garlic powder. Mix until a sticky dough forms. Knead lightly for 2–3 minutes until smooth.
  2. Let the dough rise: Cover the dough and let it rest at room temperature for 4–6 hours until it becomes puffy and slightly risen, developing flavor and texture.
  3. Preheat and prepare baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and drizzle with olive oil to prevent sticking.
  4. Shape the dough: Transfer the rested dough onto the prepared baking sheet and gently press it into a rectangle about ½ inch thick.
  5. Add toppings: Brush the surface of the dough with olive oil. Evenly sprinkle mozzarella, cheddar, Parmesan cheeses, and dried Italian herbs over the top. Optionally, sprinkle coarse salt for extra crunch.
  6. Score the dough: Using a pizza cutter, lightly score the dough into breadstick shapes to make cutting easier after baking.
  7. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 18–22 minutes, or until the breadsticks are golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
  8. Cool and serve: Allow to cool slightly, then cut along the scored lines and serve the breadsticks warm for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • You can prepare the dough the night before and ferment it overnight in the fridge for enhanced flavor and convenience.
  • Add crushed red pepper flakes to the cheese topping for a spicy kick.
  • Feel free to swap cheeses according to your preference; for example, provolone or gouda make delicious alternatives.
  • Brush extra olive oil after baking for a glossier finish if desired.
