Description
Crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside, these classic mozzarella sticks make the perfect appetizer or snack. Coated in seasoned Italian-style breadcrumbs and double dipped for extra crispiness, they are fried to golden perfection and best enjoyed warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
Cheese
- 16 string cheese sticks (cut in half)
Coating
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups Italian-style breadcrumbs
- Salt and pepper to taste
Batter
- 2 eggs
- 2 teaspoons milk
For Frying
- Oil for frying (enough to deep fry)
Instructions
- Prepare Dredging Stations: Set up three separate bowls. Place the all-purpose flour in the first bowl. In the second bowl, beat the eggs together with the milk until smooth. In the third bowl, combine the Italian-style breadcrumbs with salt and pepper, mixing well for even seasoning.
- Coat the Cheese Sticks: Take each cheese stick half and thoroughly coat it first in the flour, then dip it into the egg and milk mixture. Roll it thoroughly in the breadcrumb mixture, ensuring full coverage. For extra crispiness and to prevent cheese leakage, repeat this process to double coat each stick.
- Freeze to Set: Arrange the coated sticks on a baking sheet or tray lined with parchment paper and freeze them for at least 2 hours. Freezing solidifies the coating and helps prevent the cheese from melting out during frying.
- Heat Oil and Fry: In a deep pot, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Carefully drop the frozen mozzarella sticks into the hot oil in small batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry each batch for about 2 to 3 minutes until they turn golden brown and crispy.
- Drain and Serve: Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried mozzarella sticks and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve immediately while warm and melty for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Freezing the coated sticks before frying is essential to keep the cheese from leaking out.
- For a spicier twist, add some cayenne pepper or garlic powder to the breadcrumb mixture.
- Serve with marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or your favorite dipping sauce for extra flavor.
- Make sure the oil temperature remains steady at 350°F to ensure even frying and prevent sogginess.
- Leftover fried mozzarella sticks can be reheated in an air fryer or oven to retain crispiness.
