Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups self-rising flour (or all-purpose flour + 2 tsp baking powder + ½ tsp salt)
- ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
- ¼ tsp black pepper
Dairy & Cheese
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (full-fat recommended)
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- ¼ cup shredded cheddar cheese (for topping)
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese (for topping)
- 1 tbsp melted butter (for brushing)
Optional
- 1–2 tbsp milk (only if dough is too dry)
- Chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease it lightly to prevent sticking.
- Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour, Greek yogurt, cheddar cheese, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and black pepper. Stir until a shaggy dough forms. If the dough feels too dry, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk to reach the right consistency.
- Shape Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface. Shape it into a rustic round loaf approximately 6 to 7 inches wide. Transfer the shaped dough onto the prepared baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, score an “X” on the top to help it expand evenly while baking.
- Add Cheese Topping: Sprinkle the remaining cheddar and Parmesan cheese evenly over the scored dough surface for a cheesy crust.
- Bake Bread: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom, indicating it is fully cooked inside.
- Butter Finish: As soon as you remove the bread from the oven, brush the top generously with melted butter to add shine and moisture.
- Cool & Serve: Allow the bread to cool for about 5 minutes. Slice and optionally garnish with chopped fresh parsley. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Using self-rising flour simplifies the recipe, but if using all-purpose flour, be sure to add baking powder and salt for leavening.
- If the dough feels sticky, lightly flour your hands and working surface to make shaping easier.
- Scoring the top prevents the loaf from cracking in unpredictable places while baking.
- This bread is best eaten the same day but can be reheated to refresh texture.
- Full-fat Greek yogurt gives the bread its tender crumb and subtle tang, but you may experiment with low-fat options.
