Description

This Butter Burger recipe is a deliciously rich and flavorful twist on the classic burger. Featuring juicy, well-seasoned beef patties cooked in butter and topped with melted American cheese and sweet sautéed onions, all sandwiched between toasted homemade buns spread generously with butter. Perfect for a comforting and indulgent meal that’s easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Onions

  • 12 tablespoons salted butter, softened and divided (1¼ sticks)
  • 1 medium sweet onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt, divided

For the Burger Patties

  • 1 pound 90% lean ground beef
  • ¾ teaspoon ground black pepper

For Assembly

  • 4 homemade burger buns, toasted
  • 4 slices American cheese

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Onions: In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add chopped onion, water, and ¼ teaspoon kosher salt. Cover and cook until onions are tender, about 5 minutes.
  2. Brown the Onions: Reduce heat to medium-low, remove cover, and cook until onions become translucent and just start to brown, approximately 3 more minutes. Transfer onto a plate and divide into 4 portions. Set aside.
  3. Prepare the Patties: Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions and gently shape each into a 4½ x ½-inch patty. Sprinkle both sides with the remaining ½ teaspoon kosher salt and ground black pepper. Refrigerate the patties for 15 to 30 minutes to firm up.
  4. Butter the Buns: Spread 2 tablespoons of softened butter on the top half of each toasted burger bun and set aside.
  5. Cook the Patties: Heat 1-2 tablespoons of butter in the same skillet used for the onions over medium-high heat until it begins to smoke. Place the patties in the skillet and cook undisturbed for 3 minutes.
  6. Flip and Melt Cheese: Flip the patties and cook for another 1 minute. Place a slice of American cheese on each patty and cook for 20-30 seconds until the cheese melts.
  7. Assemble the Burgers: Place the cooked patties on the toasted bun bottoms, add a portion of sautéed onions on each patty, then top with the buttered bun tops. Serve immediately for best flavor.

Notes

  • Use fresh ground beef that is 90% lean to ensure juicy patties.
  • Adjust butter quantity to taste for a richer or lighter burger.
  • For best results, use homemade burger buns and toast them before assembly.
  • Allow the patties to chill in the fridge to maintain shape during cooking.
  • Can be served with your favorite burger toppings like lettuce, tomato, or pickles for variation.
